Overview
New Zealand has 8 Universities, 25 Polytechnics/Institutes of Technology and about 440 secondary schools. Its’ high-quality education system hosts over 93,000 international students from around the world every year.
International students have the choice to study in a modern city with the shopping, multicultural restaurants, night clubs, live theatre, art galleries, museums, sports stadiums, or in a slower pace location of the rural areas with access to the farmlands and orchards.
From 2006, all new international PhD students pay the same fees as New Zealand domestic students for their PhD studies. Furthermore, the dependent children of all international PhD students are also classified as domestic students in New Zealand state schools. The partners of the international PhD students are able to apply for an open work permit valid for the duration of the student's course of study.

The 25 Polytechnics/Institutes of Technology provide professional and vocational education and training ranging from introductory studies through to full degree programmes. Qualifications are designed to allow students to enter and exit at different levels appropriate to their academic level and English language ability. Courses in disciplines such as agriculture, art and design, building and construction, business, engineering, marine studies, nursing, science and technology, media studies and tourism and hospitality are developed in association with advisory groups representing the industries, commerce and the community. A degree from one of these institutions has equal status with a university degree.

New Zealand has an international reputation as a safe and friendly country. New Zealanders firmly believe in social equality and formality and stuffiness. New Zealanders are very friendly and hold an interested in learning about other people’s culture and society.
The differences between high and low income people are not distinct and most New Zealanders have access to a range of affordable social and sporting activities. New Zealanders are very passionate about the outdoors. Much of their entertainment is done outdoors. New Zealanders also love sports especially, rugby, cricket and netball.
Work While You Study
International students studying full time in New Zealand on a student visa, are permitted to work if they get a "Variation of Conditions" on their visa. Students can then work for up to 20 hours per week during the school term, and full time during the holidays, under certain conditions. International students must apply first to the Immigration New Zealand first.

Accommodation
An estimated total cost depends on each student spending habits. However, an estimated total cost of living in New Zealand would be between NZD$8,000 and NZD$10,000 a year including accommodation, transport and entertainment.
Usually universities and polytechnics offer student accommodation on campus. Some students prefer to live off campus, in this case advice is given to international students from the student support services provided by most institutes.

Cost of Health Insurance
International students in New Zealand are required to have Travel/Medical Insurance to cover all of the dental, medical and hospital costs. This is a legal requirement under the New Zealand Ministry of Education Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students.
At enrolment, international students will be asked to show that they have the appropriate and current medical and travel insurance. If they do not have an appropriate alternative policy then they will be automatically invoiced at enrolment for the Institutions’ approved default insurance. An estimate cost of the default insurance could range from NZD$529 per year or NZD$265 for one semester per student.
